Sneak Preview: The Tote

A new design is coming to the Pesky Cat Designs shop. It's a generously sized tote bag with plenty of room to bring your essentials and more. Two interior slip pockets and a zippered pocket keep all your things organized. This bag also features two magnetic snaps to keep your bag securely closed.

The one pictured here is made from buttery soft faux leather. I've searched high and low for a faux leather that I am happy with. This one feels so nice and looks great as well. I'll be adding a  couple in red and fudge to the shop later today.

Tip of the day: If you plan to work with faux leather may I suggest purchasing some heavy duty binder clips. Pinning thick faux leather is near to impossible especially when trying to hold together four layers to sew up a strap. These binder clips work perfectly. And a teflon sewing foot also helps tremendously!

Yael- Thank you for your very sweet comment! :)

Kerry- The tote bag is made from faux leather but it really does look like real leather. I did research online and found tips for working with real leather to help me with the faux leather. Thanks for stopping!

Great addition to your shop, Elisa, I'm sure it will be another bestseller!

And thanks for the tip, I haven't worked with any type of leather yet but am tempted to try one day...

Beautiful! But where did you find the faux leather? I haven't found any I like...
BarbaraG- The best sources for faux leather are upholstery shops. If it's good enough for a chair it's definitely sturdy enough for bag.
www.diyupholsterysupply.com has a great selection and they send free samples so you can feel and see before you buy.

Has excellent faux leather as well.
I did want to mention that that 100% polyurethane what you want to look for versus PVC vinyl.

According to Bretano's website: Polyurethane is a greener alternative to PVC (vinyl) and leather. Comparatively, polyurethane is much more environmentally friendly in both production and after-care. Polyurethane is degradable and is designed to deteriorate after usage. Naturally soft and flexible, polyurethane does not require the solvents used to soften PVC or leather.

Home Sweet Home

After spending several months on a job assignment that took me away from my studio, I'm finally back in St. Augustine, FL. I worked with a wonderful group of folks and enjoyed my stay in Tarrytown, NY which is about 40 minutes by train into NYC.
I'm eager to get back to designing and creating and have lots of new ideas I can't wait to get started on.

Above is a shot of Millie, a wonderful coworker back in New York, modeling the Harris Tweed Patchwork Satchel. Wish I had her here for my next photo shoot!

Time

My work pictured on the left has taken time away from my work on the right. Spending free time these days with friends and walks on the beach.

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

My One Second of Fame

I had my one second of fame today! I was hoping for the 15 minutes promised by Andy Warhol but I can't complain.

On March 27th I got a call from a producer of CBS Sunday Morning News letting me know that they are doing a feature on America's handmade economy and want to feature some of my bags on the set. I was quite excited. I dropped off some of my handbags at the studio that day. Posted above is my security entrance card. My first name is spelled wrong and my head is turned to the side because the producer asked me a question just as the security guard was taking the photo. I was allowed in the building with my profile shot so all was well.

The CBS feature was broadcast nationally today. I was not at home and only had access to a small portable black and white TV with so so reception. Yes, rabbit ears. In the opening shot, CBS Sunday Morning News anchor Charles Osgood points to my handbags for about a second. he he  But I am still honored that they chose my bags from the th…
