It's Arriving Today!

The Juki TL-98QE

So the sweet little machine posted above is arriving today via UPS and I can't wait! It was ordered yesterday afternoon and I already got a notice that it will be delivered today. Wow! I have to thank Aki of Oktak handbags and purses for being so sweet and taking time out from her busy schedule to give me some advice  about which machine to purchase. By the way, you must check out Aki's handbags and accessories at her Etsy shop Oktak. Her work is absolutely beautiful. She has such an eye for beautiful fabric and design.
The Juki that I purchased is a straight stitch semi-industrial high speed sewing machine. My present machine, a Brother Innovis 40, is great for it's variety of stitches especially the applique stitch that I use the most. But for sewing handbags it is just not strong enough. I purchased it a year ago and have already cracked 4 bobbin cases! At $39 dollars a pop at my local dealer it was getting quite expensive. Yesterday I ordered two directly from Brother and they just cost me $20 dollars each so I was glad. From now on I plan on doing all my applique work on the Brother and everything else on my Juki. I have to add that the Juki sews at 1,500 spm which I am thrilled about. My Brother sews at 850 spm and I often find my mind wandering when doing my straight stitching. With the Juki 's faster stitch I am sure l will keep my mind and eyes on my fabric at all times!

I secretly want a sewing machine. My mom sews and makes my kids all types of things. My mom would LOVE that new sewing machine you are getting. Love those types of packages from UPS. =D

Sounds like a great machine! I have a Bernina 1008 myself, a bit stronger than the average "domestic" machine but it does struggle a bit with heavy fabrics (might also be due to the fact that I haven't gotten round to oiling it for some time... )
Be sure not to let your eyes wonder, though - we did some sewing on very fast industrial machines in college and a friend of mine got her finger pierced. Ouch!
Yikes! Thanks for the advice Damjana.
I got my machine today, read the manual and starting sewing. The thought of piercing my finger came across my mind more than once today! But I do have to say, the Juki is phenomenal. :)

The Pesky Cat's Day Dream

Katzenhohle by Dornroeschen Filzunikate I recently came across this incredible cat bed made by German artist Dornroeschen Filzunikate. This beautiful piece of functional art called a Katzenhohle , cat cave, is handmade of felted wool. It's definitely the most unique cat bed I have ever seen. It would bring a bit of nature into my urban NYC home. I think my Anni would love a cat cave although her favorite spots right now are the pillow behind my head in bed, a straw basket that was meant to store magazines and a storage box made from fabric that becomes a hammock when she sleeps in it. My sweet Anni FOX 5 Update : A while back I wrote a post about a story that Fox 5 news was doing on Etsy and the handmade market. I was interviewed in my studio as part of the feature. An Etsy press agent recently informed me that the story aired April 15th and he also missed it. He said he is trying to get a copy of it from the studio. I'll be sure to post a link to it when it becomes availab...

Music Inspired

Pink Floyd   Bowie   Red Hot Chili Peppers  Hand-painted hazmat suit with images from Pink Floyd The Wall. This is still a work in progress. Plan to wear to a Halloween party this year. Below shows back of suit.  Closet door painted by me as a teenager around 1980. Music and art has always been a big part of my life. In the past year I have added a music-inspired collection of bags to my shop. The appliques are hand-cut and then machine stitched to the bag. No two bags are ever exactly alike. One-of-a-kind and all handmade by me in my studio from start to finish. See the entire collection here.
